Bilgi Teknolojileri ve İletişim Kurumu (BTK), the Turkish Registry, has announced the launch of the top-level domain .TR.
The launch starts with a Transition Process, during which second-level .TR registrations will be grandfathered based on the extensions and allocation dates. Extensions are divided into different categories, and a priority order has been determined according to these categories.
The priority categories and dates are:
Category 1: 14 September 2023 – Owners of domains under extensions .GOV.TR, .EDU.TR, .TSK.TR, .BEL.TR, .POL.TR, .K12.TR can apply for the same domain under .TR.
Category 2: November 2023 – Owners of domains under extension .ORG.TR (Professional organisations with public institution status, public beneficial associations, tax-exempt foundations, and employee or employer professional organisations) can apply for the same domain under .TR.
Category 3: February 2024 – Owners of domains under the rest of extensions .KEP.TR, .AV.TR, .COM.TR, .ORG.TR that do not meet the conditions of Category 2; .NET.TR, .BIZ.TR, .INFO.TR, .TV.TR, .GEN.TR, .WEB.TR, .NAME.TR, .BBS.TR, etc; can apply for the same domain under .TR.
Second-level domains should have been registered before 25 August 2023.
For Categories 2 and 3, the exact dates will be determined a bit later – we will inform you then.
General Availability is expected to start in June 2024.
Within the scope of Category 3 there will be a priority in allocation based on hierarchical order, and when there is more than one application, priority will be given in the following order: .KEP.TR, .AV.TR, .DR.TR, .COM.TR, .ORG.TR, .NET.TR, .GEN.TR, .WEB.TR, .NAME.TR, .INFO.TR, .BBS.TR, .TEL.TR.
For instance, if the same domains exist on different extensions, such as comlaude.AV.TR and comlaude.COM.TR, priority will be given to the registrant of the .AV.TR domain.
It is expected that applications for Category 3 will be collected for three months and evaluations will be made during the following one-month period, when allocations will be carried out.

NIC.PY has announced that it is now possible to register domains with accents, the “ñ” character and characters included in the Guaraní alphabet.
Registrants of ASCII domains registered before 1 July 2023 can register the same domain including IDN characters until 31 December 2023.
KeNIC, the Kenyan registry, has announced that it will run another auction starting 2 October 2023 at 6am GMT to 3 November 2023 at 8.59pm GMT.
