New ccTLD Update – .ZA – South African Government requires website link to COVID-19 Portal

ZACR, the registry operator for the ccTLD .ZA in South Africa, has announced a Call To Action by the South African government requiring that, with immediate effect, all .ZA domain name holders that have an associated website (which does not redirect from a .ZA domain to another TLD extension, eg .COM), must create a landing page with a visible link to www.sacoronavirus.co.za – the COVID-19 South African Online Resource & News Portal. This is to help create more awareness around COVID-19. We spoke with ZACR today and they have confirmed that the notice only applies to .ZA domains and not the new gTLDs they operate (.AFRICA, .CAPETOWN, .DURBAN and .JOBURG).

More details can be found at Section 5.1.4 of Regulation No. 43164 published on 26 March 2020. Whilst the Regulation includes further content which will be of most relevance to businesses in the telecoms industry, the obligations of any clients with live .ZA domains who are not in the telecoms industry end with the addition of this link to their website.
