.ax Åland Islands

Should you wish to register .ax names with us or transfer .ax names to our management,  the Government of Åland imposes certain conditions. As set out in our Terms and Conditions, by placing an order with us you unconditionally agree to be bound by these conditions, any Registrant Agreement and/or Domain Name Licence with the .ax Domain Authority. You agree and acknowledge the .ax registry policies and conditions as set out below and updated from time to time.

The registration of domain names under the top level domain .ax is regulated by

  • the Information Society Code (917/2014) en20140917.pdf (finlex.fi) (Chapter 21 -sections 163 – 172) and
  • the Domain Name Regulation M68 of 5 September 2016 found under the “Responsibility, regulations and legislation” tab here.

The law stipulates amongst other things the operational model for administration of domain names, responsibilities and obligations as well as the form and content of the domain name.

On your request, Com Laude will register the domain name in the domain name registry system administered by the Government of Åland, update the domain name, renew the validity of the domain name, change the domain name registrar, transfer the domain name to another holder or remove the domain name from the domain name register.

You agree to provide accurate registration information for the registered name (including e-mail address confirmed by return e-mail or other method), and immediately correct and update the registration information for the registered name during the registration term for the registered name.

We must provide you with:

  • Information on the domain name form, content and legality
  • Notification if we terminate our operations or are prohibited from operating .ax domain names.

Before registering a domain name, note the permitted characters for a domain name set out in Section 12 of the Domain Name Regulation M68.  The domain name must include between 2 and 63 characters.

Your domain name must not be:

  • identical to a protected name or trademark owned by another party, unless you can present an acceptable reason for registering the domain name; or
  • similar to a protected name or trademark owned by another party, if the clear intent of registering the domain name is to benefit from it or to cause damage.

Before registration, you should consult the:

  • information on the protected names that have been entered into the Finnish Trade Register or into the registers of associations, foundations or political parties PRH – Trade Register;
  • information on trademarks entered into the Finnish register of trademarks Trademark search | PRH or the trademark register of the European Union TMView (tmdn.org).

If you wish to transfer your domain name to another holder, you must request the transfer from us.

If you wish to switch domain name registrars, you must either

  • request the new registrar to obtain a registrar transfer key from us; or
  • request the registrar transfer key to be released from us in person and submit it to the new registrar.

You must make the request to switch domain name registrars in writing.
