The five-year Right of Registration period launched back in June 2014 by Nominet, the registry operator for the .UK ccTLD, has come to an end. Domain holders of third-level .UK domains (.CO.UK, .ORG.UK, .ME.UK, .NET.UK, .PLC.UK and .LTD.UK) had until 25 June to secure their equivalent shorter second-level .UK domains before they were released to the public.

Update on .eu domains following Brexit
EURid, the Registry for .eu domain names, has published a Brexit action plan following discussions with the European Commission. Such discussions came about after the Commission’s Notice to Stakeholders, published in March last year, announced that UK undertakings and organisations would no longer be eligible to hold .eu domain names.

From 1 February 2019, “DNS Flag Day”, DNS systems around the world are going to disable some backwards compatibility features. This means that old or misconfigured DNS servers will no longer function correctly. Specifically, zones hosted on servers that do not support EDNS0 queries will fail to resolve correctly.

According to the latest Verisign Domain Name Industry Brief there are now approximately 342.4 million domain name registrations across all top-level domains (TLDs), which is an increase of approximately 2.6 million domain name registrations (0.8%) over the second quarter of 2018. That’s an increase of circa 11.7 million more domain name registrations, or 3.5 percent, than at the same time last year.

A special working group charged with coming up with changes to the Whois service that bring it in line with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) published its initial report on 21 November 2018 and opened it up for public comment. The Initial Report responds to the call to answer a set of questions and determine if the Temporary Specification for gTLD Registration Data should become a General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)-compliant ICANN Consensus Policy as is, or one with modifications.
