New ccTLD Update – Launch of IDN .EU TLD in Greek

EURid, the registry operator for .EU, has announced it is to launch the .ευ TLD, .EU in Greek script, on 14 November 2019.

The same registration policy, available for the existing Latin .EU and the Cyrillic . ею string will also apply to the Greek .ευ string. Only Greek characters, no ASCII, will be allowed in domain registrations in the .ευ domain.

EURid will follow the same procedure as used previously for the launch of the Cyrillic TLD .ею. Domains already registered in Greek script under the Latin .EU string will undergo a “script adjustment” phase and registered domain name(s) in Greek will be moved to the .ευ extension.

The original (.EU) and cloned domain names (.ευ) will co-exist until 13 November 2022 and can be maintained by registrars independently of one another. During this period it will only be necessary to pay fees for the domain name under .EU. On 14 November 2022, the domain names in Greek under .EU will be phased out and their equivalents under .ευ will remain registered in the EURid database. The expiry date of the domain name in Greek under .ευ will depend on the expiry date of the domain name under .EU at the time it was cloned.

There is no Sunrise for this domain, any new domains can be registered in IDN.ευ from the opening date 14 November 2019.
